Project Overview

Baybeats B-Sides is a behind-the-scenes documentary exploring the people, processes and passion that bring Esplanade's annual Baybeats festival to life. As Singapore's largest free alternative music festival, Baybeats has become an important platform for independent musicians and a significant fixture in the local music scene.

Filmed across multiple days leading up to and during the festival, the documentary follows the teams responsible for programming, marketing, technical production, logistics and artist development. Through interviews, observational footage and live performances, the film offers an inside look at the work required to transform an ambitious idea into a large-scale public event.

Drawing from a wide range of material captured across different locations, formats and shooting styles, the documentary combines candid conversations, festival preparations and live music moments into a single narrative. The inclusion of handheld camcorder footage helped reinforce the independent and grassroots spirit that has defined Baybeats since its inception.

As both a long-time attendee and admirer of the festival, this was a particularly rewarding project to work on. Beyond documenting the event itself, the film celebrates the community, creativity and collective effort that continue to make Baybeats an important part of Singapore's music landscape.

Role

I joined the project during post-production and was responsible for shaping the documentary's final narrative. Working with footage captured across multiple shoot days, I developed the story structure, identified key themes and integrated interviews, live performances and observational moments into a cohesive viewing experience.
